You can recognise individual characters reliably and are ready for the next step: hearing full words as a unit instead of character-by-character.
Where to Go
Open Word Training from the launcher and use Common Words. The app loads real English words up to your configured length, shuffles them, and plays each one the configured number of times.
Settings to Review
- Max word length (on the Word Training screen itself) — start short, 3–4 characters, and raise it as words start feeling instant. Default is 5.
- Repeat count (Word Training screen, 1×/2×/3×) — set to 2× or 3× while a length is new, drop to 1× once words are easy.
- Farnsworth WPM — unlike single-character drilling, keep Farnsworth on here (default 20 WPM). Words are harder to parse than isolated characters, and the extra gap gives you time to assemble the sounds into a word before the next one starts.
- Auto Speed — Enable — a good fit for this kind of continuous drilling: it's on by default and gradually raises your WPM every 500 characters played, with no manual adjustment needed.
- Enable TTS — this is the default posture, not just an option: leave it on for spoken confirmation after each word. Either TTS or HCB (on by default) routes you into the dedicated training screen, which only reveals a word after it has played — no separate Text display setting needed; nothing on screen can give it away in advance.
- Don't write words down. Say the word back or just recognise it silently — writing substitutes a slower motor skill for the instant auditory recognition you're actually building.
Word Training also has HAM Abbreviations (QRM, QRN, QSO, 73, RST
reports, …) and Call Signs — useful once basic vocabulary is solid
and you're preparing for real on-air copy. Both use the same repeat-count and TTS
settings as Common Words.
